"Fire and Water" by J.V. Stanley and Aramey
April 10th 2013
Two lifelong poets, sisters, and best friends have fused together to bring you a variety of poems designed to melt the heart and inspire the soul. Separated for a time and coming back together stronger than ever they proudly present, "Fire and Water." The poems touch upon the earthly and otherworldly cares, delving into the complexities of the soul through the various trials faced through love, heartache, and everything in between. Join them on their journey through the dark and into the light. Travel with them through the gauntlet of poetic life with its obstacles at every turn. Each challenge they faced, however, paved the way for them to step forward with fierce determination and ever present love. Their poetry is mostly free-verse, but touch upon various forms such as the Kyrielle, Harrishma Rhyme, the Italian Sonnet, Etheree, and Twin Etheree.

"Faces In Still Waters", By: J. V. Stanley
Published November 20, 2013
When Kara Frazer was eleven years old, her little brother died in a tragic fire. Now twenty, she is still plagued from the guilt of his death. She moved to Michigamme with Samantha, her morally flexible best friend, to attend college. Upon her arrival, a grisly ghost of a little boy confronted her by the lake along with a swarm of fireflies-the harbingers of death.
Between attending classes, conversing with her overbearingly religious schizophrenic mother, portraying the conventional wallflower at Sam’s outrageous parties; she becomes haunted by vengeful spirits. These spirits are blackened with resentment and reside within the murky depths of the lake. They begin their quest for her soul after she witnessed the reflections on the water’s surface depicting those about to die and her plans to stop it.
As Kara vies for the attention of the shady middle-aged Englishman across the lake, she realizes she has a choice. Find the killer to save the souls destined to spend eternity at the bottom of the lake or succumb to its evil herself and become as black and hateful as the souls that reside within it.
From the complexities of friendship, the lure of the older man, to the extent one would go to for self-preservation; Faces in Still Waters captures the consequences of holding onto guilt.
“There’s a bit of darkness in everyone’s heart and it sneaks up on us at the most inopportune moments, when we are at our most vulnerable. Our guilt consumes us with its acidic nature and eats away at the soul.”

"Love Notes & Zanzibar" by J. V. Stanley
July 30, 2019
Isa's life is certainly no bed of roses. It's more of a snot-covered, hole-in-the-duvet...Is that...What is that? Dried banana? Heartbroken and depressed after suffering an emotionally crippling tragedy, her world had been nothing but tears and pain for the past two years. Unable to ignore the needs of her cherub-faced daughter-or the pile of unpaid bills on her coffee table-any longer, Isa accepts a position at the local ice cream parlor. She's (mostly fully prepared for long nights of cleaning sour milk, sweeping spoons and straw wrappers, and finding the occasional teenagers sneaking kisses behind the store. What she never prepared herself for, however; was the note. One small envelope sealed in wax with the initials J. R. R. left with a deep red rose, a cozy little dish of Zanzibar ice cream is just the small spark Isa's needed to feel again. Each additional note, filled with compliments and curious observations, has Isa desperate to find her mystery admirer. Perhaps he can be the one to warm her iced-over heart, to help her remember how to smile. To give her a second chance at love

I was the reigning Venus in all of Venice, much to my mother’s ire, my sensuality a curse during The Inquisition. Thus I was swiftly carried unconscious by the waves to an island where I would become more than what I was…a courtesan with a voice that could—and did—kill relentlessly, my carnal desires coalescing with the heartbeats I stole as I had the hungry souls of men in Venice. I shimmied my shoulders, inviting them to my breast where they would plunge their faces I tore in half. I thirsted for the sensation—feeling them grow hard as their blood poured from my lips. I was voracious until he made that kill as an offering unto me. I could see the death in his eyes, the same death that I beheld in the mirrored surface of the water. I drank him in as he stole away the one thing I kept hidden—the only thing that remained of my virtue…the only thing left I would bloody myself to protect.

"Love and Candied Orange Peels" by J. V. Stanley

Isa
I couldn’t imagine my life without Leonard. He was more than the love of my life—he was my soul. When a cruel twist of fate stole him from me, I was left alone without an identity or future that I could see. Two years later, still mourning my loss, I found solace in writing—immortalizing our love story. I never thought I could love again, that is until I started receiving love notes from a secret admirer—thoughtful and poetic love notes with a cozy dish of Zanzibar ice cream and a beautiful red rose. And then I met him. He captured my attention so quickly and I could feel my broken heart mending, but I could not shake the guilt I felt. Leonard. His memory consumed me far more than the blossoming romance and I could not let it go, so I wrote. And then it happened. In a whirlwind of chance, I submitted the story to a publisher on behest of my best friend Lane, and it was accepted. What happened next would be the next chapter, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted him to be a part of it.
Joren
She captured me. I was spellbound by her grace and beauty, but most of all her endurance through her heartbreak. She tried pulling away, but I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. I knew his memory was always in the forefront of her mind. The jealousy seared through my soul like a hot poker piercing my heart. How could I be jealous of a memory? How can I reach into her heart and capture the heat with a bowl of candied orange peels? When she signed the contract, I thought it was over. All I could see or hear was Leonard and her soft sobs as she sat in the corner remembering. The publicity, the interviews, the time away from home traveling the country promoting her book left me wondering if she could make enough room in her heart for me…

"The Depths of Solitude" by J. V. Stanley
Ariel wasn’t the only mermaid in the sea.
Dive into a magical world beyond the seafoam where things aren’t always what they seem:
Deep in the ocean, where the water is green like the eyes of a wanton princess on a starless night, lives a Sea King and his loyal subjects. They live past any port or peer and could never be reached by man or even ship at sail. It is in this place—far beneath the emerald tarp that shields them from the sun that the Sea King’s castle stands taller than all the coral reefs one could ever imagine—where magical tales commence.
Here, in this place beneath the sea, one-of-a-kind flowers and plants sprout hope and colors human eyes have never seen. In this place, fish of every rainbow stripe flutter like butterflies through endless indigo leaves. But it isn’t perfect. Even magical places have cave-like crevices of darkness and secrets too.
Join bestselling and award-winning authors as they travel to a mystical world to tell the tales of merfolk both dark and beautiful.

Chronicles of a Really bad day anthology for charity
We have all had those days. The ones where we wished that we had stayed in bed with a good book and a glass of wine. Those days kick our collective behinds. When we hear of our friends having those sorts of days, we can’t help but consume ourselves with the feeling of schadenfreude mixed with empathy; we’ve all been there (we’re just glad its you and not us at the moment).
Thus, ‘The Chronicles of a Really Bad Day’ was born via the Nanowrimo group on Facebook. Inspired by my series of crappy days, I decided to write a novella following a man who had about as good of luck as I had. This novella ended up inspiring another writer to write one of her own. From there, it inspired an anthology that welcomes all author’s take on the subject. Murphy’s Law has on more than one occasion, bludgeoned us into submission and it sucks. It reminds us of others who have it far worse, though, that’s the sad reality of it.
Kelly Nutting, John Murray McKay (author of The N Days series), and myself have begun the first steps in cultivating this anthology series through its Facebook page with other members on the Wrimo group. We will maintain up-to-date information and guidelines for the anthology. We welcome all writers, authors, poets, and wrimos to submit. Proceeds will go toward a charity that will be voted upon by the community, but one that must help others; the individuals hit hard by circumstances or the economy. Everyone could use some help every so often and sometimes people don’t have just one bad day, but a series of bad days.
